Arm unveils new AI designs and software for smartphones

Arm has a chance to innovate throughout the computational stack as AI models are developing faster than hardware capabilities.

Arm recently released new software tools and chip blueprints designed to improve cellphones’ AI task performance. However, Arm went one step further and made adjustments to the way they provide these blueprints, which might hasten adoption.

Arm is continuously improving its solution portfolio to optimize the advantages of its leading process nodes. They unveiled the Arm Compute Subsystems (CSS) for Client, their most recent state-of-the-art compute solution designed for PC and smartphone AI applications.

A notable speed boost is promised by this CSS for Clients: computation and graphics performance will increase by over 30%, and AI inference for tasks related to AI, machine learning, and computer vision will be 59% quicker.

Arm’s technology is becoming more and more popular in PCs and data centers, where energy efficiency is highly valued, even though it was instrumental in the smartphone revolution. While smartphones continue to be Arm’s largest market, the business is growing its product line and providing intellectual property to competitors like Apple, Qualcomm, and MediaTek.

They have introduced new GPUs and CPU designs that are optimized for AI workloads, along with software tools that make it easier to create chatbots and other AI applications on Arm chips.

However, the delivery of these goods is what changes the game. In the past, Arm sent specifications or conceptual ideas, which chipmakers had to convert into tangible blueprints—a very difficult task given the billions of transistors involved.

Arm worked with Samsung and TSMC to produce tangible chip drawings for production for this most recent release, which was a major time-saver.

The collaboration was praised by Samsung’s Jongwook Kye, who said that Arm’s CPU solutions coupled with their 3nm process meet the increasing demand for generative AI in mobile devices through “early and tight collaboration” in the areas of DTCO and PPA maximization for an on-time silicon delivery that meets performance and efficiency demands.

In line with this, Dan Kochpatcharin, president of TSMC’s ecosystem and alliance management division, described the AI-optimized CSS as “a prime example” of how the company’s partnership with Arm helps designers push the boundaries of semiconductor innovation to achieve unrivaled AI performance and efficiency.

Kochpatcharin emphasized, “We empower our customers to accelerate their AI innovation using the most advanced process technologies and design solutions, together with Arm and our Open Innovation Platform® (OIP) ecosystem partners.”

Instead of attempting to outbid rivals in the market, Arm offers optimized designs for neural processors that provide state-of-the-art artificial intelligence capabilities, allowing for a quicker time to market.

“We’re combining a platform where these accelerators can be very tightly coupled” to client NPUs, as Arm’s Chris Bergey put it.

In essence, Arm offers “baked” designs that are more sophisticated, which clients may combine with their accelerators to quickly create potent AI-driven processors and gadgets.
